Hornet Deer Avoidance System

About 8 years ago, I was traveling through a small Iowa municipality around 3:00 PM. There was significant traffic and two deer approached the roadway near the opposite side of a 4 lane highway. I was not too close but switched my lights on (my Hornet was wired through my lights). Both deer immediately stopped in their tracks and looked across two lanes of traffic directly at my auto and turned and proceeded down the hill away for the roadway. I have been a believer ever since.

The Many Uses of the White Pine

The Eastern White Pine, the largest native pine in North America, has a variety of uses.  Because of its rapid growth, the White Pine is widely grown as a forestry tree.  Its wood has been used in cabinetry, interior finish carpentry, and carving and woodworking.  Native Americans used the bark of the White Pine as food, and early colonists were known to have made cough medicine from the bark.

In earlier nautical times, large trees were used for masts on ships.  The British Royal Navy used to mark such desired trees with a particular arrow symbol.  One such specimen was once found in South Carolina (far south of its native range), and it was found that this arrow, also known as a symbol of the British King, had been placed on tree.  Thus, the town that cropped up in the area was appropriately named Kingstree.
