Choosing the Right Christmas Tree Stand

If you’ve ever experienced a decorated Christmas tree tipping over, you know just how messy, expensive, and damaging this situation can be.  Moreover, an unsteady Christmas tree poses a real safety threat in your home, especially if you have pets or small children.  This is why choosing the right stand for your Christmas tree is so very critical.

Christmas tree stand

Millions of Americans display live Christmas trees in their homes each year, and many families never give a second thought to the tree stand they use.  They simply pick out a stand at their local tree farm or hardware store, often choosing the least expensive option, and simply assume it will hold the tree without a problem.  But the truth is, falling trees cause many fires, personal injuries, and property damage claims every year.  Not only do your valuable ornaments break, but woodwork, walls, and flooring are often scratched, and floors and carpets are damaged from water that spills out of the tree’s reservoir.  Furthermore, if the tree falls on a pet or child, tragedy can occur.  In any case, it’s always a good idea to make sure that you have an appropriately sized tree stand for the Christmas tree you are displaying.

The first consideration when choosing a tree stand is always the height of your tree.  Many families are now displaying taller trees than in years past, especially with the popularity of vaulted and elevated ceilings in newer homes.  If you will be displaying a tree taller than 9 foot, you should definitely evaluate your stand to be sure it’s designed to do the job.

The next consideration is the size of the tree’s trunk.  Obviously, the taller the tree you select, the larger the trunk will be.  You want to be sure that the stand you choose has a wide enough neck and water reservoir to accommodate the diameter of your tree’s trunk.

Last, but not least, you also want to consider the size of the tree stand’s water reservoir.  How many gallons of water does it hold?  Remember that larger trees will drink more water each day, so having a tree stand with a big reservoir is advantageous, because you won’t have to refill it as often.  If you already have a tree stand and its reservoir isn’t as big as you’d like it to be, one option is to purchase an automatic Christmas tree waterer.  These devices are like an additional, external reservoir that sits beside the stand and funnels water into the tree stand reservoir as needed.  The advantage of an automatic watering system is that it can cut back significantly on the frequency of watering the tree.

If you are shopping for tree stands and can’t decide between two models, let material be your guide.  Tree stands made of steel are always sturdier and longer lasting than those made of plastic.  And when in doubt about the size of tree stand you need, always opt for the larger one.  It’s no problem to put a smaller tree into a large tree stand, but you can’t put a large tree into a small stand.  A good Christmas tree stand is an investment that you’ll use for many years, so always err on the side of caution and buy one size larger than you think you might need.  This way you know you’ll be covered down the road.  Remember, having the right size and style of tree stand is more than just a matter of convenience; it’s also a matter of personal safety.

Preparing for a Hurricane - 4 Tips That Save Lives

During hurricane season, which in the United States stretches from June through November, homes in coastal communities all along the Southeast try to prepare for the threat of these terrible storms.  The first concern of any homeowner is how to prepare your home for the maximum safety of your family.  In this article, we’ll explore four basic tips that will help you get ready for the potential onslaught of a hurricane or tropical storm.

Tip #1: Prepare an Emergency Kit
A well stocked emergency kit is a valuable tool that can save lives in the event of a hurricane.  Your emergency kit should be stored in an easily accessible location and in a watertight container.  The most critical items in any emergency kit are first aid supplies, essential medicines, flashlight, handheld radio, extra batteries, emergency phone numbers, cash and credit cards, extra keys to your home and vehicles, insurance cards and policy information, and a hand crank cell phone charger.  Some other items that you might want to store with your emergency kit would be canned food and a can opener, a supply of bottled water, blankets, seasonal clothing, toilet paper, hand sanitizing gel, and diapers and canned formula if you have an infant in your home.  Also, it’s important to remember to refresh your emergency kit on a regular basis to be sure any perishable items haven’t expired.

Tip #2: Have an Emergency Action Plan
When a hurricane strikes, will your family know what to do?  Have a plan of action in place, and be sure that every family member knows where to go and what to do when they get there.  Your emergency action plan should cover each family member’s roles and responsibilities, what to do if you have to evacuate, as well as plans for your pets.
Rehearse the plan with younger children so that they won’t forget the most important details.  And last but not least, give a copy of your plan to nearby relatives or a neighbor, so they will know where you are and how to contact you in.

Tip #3: Stay Informed
Knowledge can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.  When you do know that a storm could be heading your way, stay informed by watching local news broadcasts or listening to the radio.  Many types of media are also now offering free texting services, where you can sign up to receive text messages about important news and weather events in your area, making it easier to stay informed when you’re on the go.

Tip #4: Do As You’re Told
Last but not least, in the event of a hurricane it is absolutely imperative that everyone follows the advice of law enforcement and government agencies, even if that advice is to evacuate.  The last thing anyone wants to do is leave their home, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

While these four tips may seem simple, it’s amazing how many people living in hurricane prone areas don’t take such basic steps to protect themselves and their families.  With a little time and forethought, it is possible to be well prepared for the possibility of a hurricane.  Remember, advance preparation is the key to saving lives, and when you consider that your family’s well being is at stake, nothing is more important.

Homemade Christmas Gifts Straight from the Garden

During the long, hot days of summer, the last thing we think about is Christmas shopping.  After all, that’s a task we usually relegate to the month of December, right?  But the truth is, the job of shopping for Christmas gifts is something many people loathe.  Parking lots are crowded, malls are jam packed, and finding just the right gift for that special someone can take hours, or even days.  What if there was a way to get some of your Christmas gifts ready during the summertime and put them away in storage so they’ll be ready to go when the holiday season rolls around?  Before you grab your keys and jump in the car to go shopping now, stop and take a look around your own home and garden.  There may be some gift possibilities lurking right under your own nose that are homemade, thoughtful, and very inexpensive.

Many of us raise vegetable gardens in the summer, and we wind up with more fresh produce than we can possibly use.  Instead of letting it rot on the vine or giving it all away to neighbors, consider canning.  Many vegetables like fresh green beans and tomatoes can be canned and then given away as gifts at the holidays.  Fresh bell peppers can be made into relishes, and cucumbers can be pickled and canned.  Cans of fresh produce also make wonderful hostess’s gifts when you are invited to holiday parties.  Top off the jar with a colorful square of fabric and tie with a ribbon to make the gift really attractive and special.

If you enjoy cooking, consider using your fresh produce to make other items like homemade spaghetti sauce, fresh salsa, or pickle relish that can be canned.  For a really nice touch, put a couple jars of spaghetti sauce into a gift basket and then include some related items such as a pound of pasta and a loaf of fresh Italian bread.  Other nice touches might include an Italian cookbook, a bottle of good red wine or gourmet olive oil, and even some fresh parmesan cheese.  The idea of themed gift baskets based on your homemade canned goods can be expanded into other areas, too.  For example, if you’ve made some fresh salsa, include items in your gift basket like tortilla chips, margarita mix, and a bottle of good quality tequila.

Homemade gifts from the garden don’t have to be limited to only vegetables.  If you grow fruits such as blueberries, cherries, or raspberries, consider making homemade jams or pie fillings that can be canned for holiday gifts.  Nice additions to round out a gift basket with these items could include a new pie dish, or some homemade bread for toasting.  Fresh fruits can also be made into syrups that can be given as gifts along with some homemade pancake mix.  Furthermore, if you grow fresh herbs such as parsley or basil, consider making fresh pesto at the end of the summer and canning it into small jars to give as gifts.

Homemade Christmas gifts that have come from your garden make nice gift items for almost anyone.  After all, everyone enjoys good food, especially when it’s homegrown.  Even better, a gift like this is very thoughtful, and shows the recipient that you put some time and thought into what to give them.  So if you’ve got a garden that’s overflowing with fresh produce, take an afternoon and do some canning.  You’ll save yourself both time and money when December rolls around!
