The Right Way to Store Your Artificial Christmas Tree

For the millions of U.S. families who display artificial Christmas trees every holiday season, the same plaguing question must be answered every year: What do I do with this thing now that the holidays are over?  For most people, an artificial Christmas tree is the largest of all the holiday decorations that has to be stored.  Concurrently, it is also typically the most expensive item, as well.  With that in mind, the way that we store artificial trees is a topic that deserves some attention.  In this article, we will explain the right way-as well as some of the wrong ways-to store your artificial Christmas tree.

For many people, the easiest and most obvious choice for artificial tree storage is to simply put it back in its original box.  Unfortunately, this is often times easier said than done.  Trying to stuff an artificial Christmas tree back into its original box is a lot like buying a king size sheet set, removing it from its zippered pouch and completely unfolding it, and then later trying to get it back into the original packaging.  In short, it’s nearly impossible.  The other problem with storing your tree in its original box is that the cardboard does little to nothing to protect the tree from getting dusty and dirty.  Cardboard can also attract insects and vermin, and in the event that it gets wet, will quickly be destroyed.

Another potential option for artificial tree storage is to wrap the tree in plastic or sheets.  To some extent, this can be a good idea, though it does depend how your tree disassembles.  Most artificial trees on the market today feature hinged branches, meaning that each section can be compressed down to a fairly narrow diameter.  If this is the case, it may be possible for you to carefully wrap each section in a piece of plastic drop cloth or an old sheet, and tie with some string or twine.  However, if you have an older artificial tree with fixed branches that don’t compress, storing in a sheet probably won’t do much good.  At best, you’ll just be draping the sheet over the tree, and this doesn’t do much to keep out dust, moisture, or pests.

By far, the best options for artificial Christmas tree storage are to purchase a plastic bin or a bag that is specifically designed for that purpose.  Such products are readily available through discount stores, specialty catalogs, and online retail outlets.  Specifically, you should look for a bag with a zipper or a container with a tight fitting lid, to keep out dust and dirt.  Furthermore, if you have an especially large or heavy tree, it might also be a good idea to look for a storage container with wheels for easy mobility.

While a tree storage bag or bin isn’t free like the original box or the old sheet in your closet, they will do a far better job of protecting your tree and keeping it clean.  And doesn’t it make more sense to spend $50 or $100 on a good tree storage container that you’ll have forever, versus spending $300 or $400 on a new artificial Christmas tree every few years, because your old tree got wrecked in storage?  Good artificial tree storage may cost you something up front, but it will save you a lot of time, hassle, and replacement trees in the long run.

Preparing for a Hurricane - 4 Tips That Save Lives

During hurricane season, which in the United States stretches from June through November, homes in coastal communities all along the Southeast try to prepare for the threat of these terrible storms.  The first concern of any homeowner is how to prepare your home for the maximum safety of your family.  In this article, we’ll explore four basic tips that will help you get ready for the potential onslaught of a hurricane or tropical storm.

Tip #1: Prepare an Emergency Kit
A well stocked emergency kit is a valuable tool that can save lives in the event of a hurricane.  Your emergency kit should be stored in an easily accessible location and in a watertight container.  The most critical items in any emergency kit are first aid supplies, essential medicines, flashlight, handheld radio, extra batteries, emergency phone numbers, cash and credit cards, extra keys to your home and vehicles, insurance cards and policy information, and a hand crank cell phone charger.  Some other items that you might want to store with your emergency kit would be canned food and a can opener, a supply of bottled water, blankets, seasonal clothing, toilet paper, hand sanitizing gel, and diapers and canned formula if you have an infant in your home.  Also, it’s important to remember to refresh your emergency kit on a regular basis to be sure any perishable items haven’t expired.

Tip #2: Have an Emergency Action Plan
When a hurricane strikes, will your family know what to do?  Have a plan of action in place, and be sure that every family member knows where to go and what to do when they get there.  Your emergency action plan should cover each family member’s roles and responsibilities, what to do if you have to evacuate, as well as plans for your pets.
Rehearse the plan with younger children so that they won’t forget the most important details.  And last but not least, give a copy of your plan to nearby relatives or a neighbor, so they will know where you are and how to contact you in.

Tip #3: Stay Informed
Knowledge can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.  When you do know that a storm could be heading your way, stay informed by watching local news broadcasts or listening to the radio.  Many types of media are also now offering free texting services, where you can sign up to receive text messages about important news and weather events in your area, making it easier to stay informed when you’re on the go.

Tip #4: Do As You’re Told
Last but not least, in the event of a hurricane it is absolutely imperative that everyone follows the advice of law enforcement and government agencies, even if that advice is to evacuate.  The last thing anyone wants to do is leave their home, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

While these four tips may seem simple, it’s amazing how many people living in hurricane prone areas don’t take such basic steps to protect themselves and their families.  With a little time and forethought, it is possible to be well prepared for the possibility of a hurricane.  Remember, advance preparation is the key to saving lives, and when you consider that your family’s well being is at stake, nothing is more important.

Home Security

How secure are you in your home?  As our world changes and crime rates rise, it is becoming more and more important to make our homes as secure as possible.  But what does this really mean?  Home security requires us to be vigilant and aware of our surroundings and assess the possible vulnerabilities that a criminal might try to exploit.  Good home security is important because it reduces the risk of property loss and, most importantly, personal injury to yourself or others.

Home Security

The first step in making sure your home is secure is to take a basic assessment of your property.  Try to look at your home as a thief might.  What would be the fastest or easiest way for an intruder to gain access to your home?  These are the areas you will want to address.  Here are some things to keep in mind as you go through this process.

Do you live in a well lighted area?  Criminals will usually shy away from homes and businesses that are well lit.  If you have a street light on your property, then you have adequate lighting already.  If not, you might want to consider adding some lights, and possibly some that are motion sensor triggered.  Try to focus on areas where there are still shadows, and particularly areas around secluded doors and windows.

Does your property have a natural barrier, such as a creek or pond?  If so, this may be to your benefit, as criminals will typically seek the path of least resistance.  Trees and shrubs can also work to your benefit.  Many homeowners will plant thorny bushes underneath low windows, making them difficult to access from outdoors.  If you don’t have any natural barriers, man-made barriers are another option.  If you don’t already have one, consider adding a security fence to your yard.

Do you have any pets that may alert you to an intruder?  Many people mistakenly think that they need a guard dog that is very vicious.  This is not true, and in fact, guard dogs can be a major liability rather than an asset.  If you’re thinking about getting a pet for security purposes, consider a watch dog.  Watch dogs are animals that aren’t extremely vigilant and tend to make a lot of noise if they sense anything out of the ordinary.  Terriers and other small breeds make very good watch dogs, and yet they are not particularly dangerous animals. If you are unable to own and care for a pet, consider putting a beware of dog sticker on the back windows or door.  This inexpensive alternative may deter a possible intruder.

Next, you’ll want to assess your home’s various points of entry.  How secure are your entry door locks?  The standard for door security has almost always been the deadbolt.  For maximum security, invest in double deadbolt entry locks, and preferably ones that are bump proof.  Lock bumping is a very easy means by which criminals can enter your home, and this method of forced entry is gaining in popularity.  Bump proof locks are becoming more of a standard, but if you cannot find them in a local store, try searching online or in a specialty store.  When upgrading the security for your entry doors, don’t neglect side and rear entrances, as these are the areas most likely to be targeted by thieves.

Lastly, you can always consider installing a home surveillance system or monitoring system.  Some systems are considered do-it-yourself alarms that you can wire up to your home telephone system.  If the alarm goes off, your phone will autodial the police or other emergency personnel.  There are also many companies that sell home security systems and monitoring services, as well.

Remember, good home security is one of the most important investments you will ever make.  When it comes to protecting your property and family, it’s worth taking the time to do a home evaluation and identify areas that need improvement.  With a relatively small monetary investment and some good common sense, many home break-ins can be prevented.
