Upgrade Your Storm Door & Boost Curb Appeal

Upgrading your home’s storm or screen door is a really easy way to boost curb appeal.  After all, the storm door is probably the first thing that visitors to your home will see, so you should want it looking its best.

If you don’t have the money to buy a new door, you might want to consider doing some basic repair work.  For example, if your screen is torn, you can easily repair it by rescreening the panel with some screen fabric and spline purchased at a home center.  If your door is aluminum and the paint is chipping, it can be repainted with automotive paint or a spray paint designed for metal.

Last but not least, don’t forget the door handle.  Many older storm doors have handles that are tarnished and rusty.  If this is the case, a new storm door handle is an easy and relatively inexpensive fix.  And if you don’t want to have to change the hardware again (or at least for a while!) look for something that features a PVD lifetime finish.  PVD is a special finishing process that is guaranteed to prevent tarnish on metal.

Before You Buy New Storm Door Hardware…

If you are in the market for a new storm door handle, there are several important things you should know before you begin shopping…

  1. The thickness of your door - Most storm doors will range anywhere from 1″ to 1-1/2″ in thickness.  Be sure you know this dimension before you start shopping.
  2. Mortise vs. Surface Mount - This one can be tricky to understand.  For a quick and clear cut explanation of the difference, see the video below:
  3. Hole pattern - If you’re like most people, you are probably buying a new handle set to replace an old one.  If this is the case, you’ve already got some holes drilled in your door, and you want to be sure that the new handle set you buy will cover up those existing holes.  It may also be advantageous to know this information so you can determine if you’ll need to drill any new holes for your new hardware.  When shopping for your new hardware set, look for a detailed line drawing or trim plate footprints that you can use to compare to your old handle set.

Storm Door Hardware

I notice much storm door hardware on upscale homes with brown tarnish. The homes, though often times in very upscale neighborhoods have door hardware that was once bright brass now is brown with tarnish and deterioration. From Home Products N More there are an assortment of finishes in PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) that literally will last a lifetime and look as good as new for years to come. What better way to make statement about your pride in home ownership than to show it the very first place a visitor lays hands on your door to enter.
